article_1In today’s society it is important to put your best face forward by keeping your smile healthy and sparkling for success. With so many options, choosing the right dental products or cosmetic procedures seems almost as painful as pulling teeth. Some important health tips and cosmetic ideas will have you beaming in no time.

Brushing teeth and flossing as much as possible can be a monotonous routine, but certainly has its benefits. Keeping teeth and gums healthy prevents bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease. Regular maintenance also has a direct bearing on overall health. According to the Mayo Clinic website, a person with gum disease is at higher risk for more serious health problems like a heart attack, stroke, diabetes or pre-term labor. Gum disease can be prevented with proper care and good oral hygiene habits.

The American Dental Association (ADA) suggests the following: brush twice a day with a soft bristled brush preferably after snacks and meals, floss daily and see the dentist regularly. Oral health can also depend on the type and amount of saliva in a mouth, and a health diet with a low sugar intake will help keep teeth clean and sparkling.

Dr. Brit Phillips, a Fort Worth Dentist who specializes in cosmetic dentistry and the rehabilitation of severe dental problems, offers this advice: “It is important to have excellent (dental) home care, to eat as little sweet stuff as possible and to see the dentist regularly.”

With a consistent routine and a healthy diet, the back-to-basics approach to healthy dental care seems to be the way to go. However, if teeth are in bad condition, cosmetic surgery or whitening procedures can give your teeth the care they deserve.

One way to improve appearance is with a teeth whitening process using at-home products or teeth-whitening procedures performed by a dentist. The number of at-home whitening products has grown rapidly through the years, which can make picking the correct product for you a daunting task.

According to the ADA there are two ways to whiten teeth: beaching products and non-bleaching products. The bleach products contain different amounts of peroxide and remove deep and surface stains from the teeth. Non-bleach products just remove surface stains. Teeth whitening products can be broken into categories. The bleach products like Crest White Strips and Colgate Platinum Whitening system differ from dentist-dispensed whiteners because they contain less peroxide.

“The over-the-counter (whiteners) are usually a more diluted solution, and tend to be less predictable, said Phillips. However, Phillips does recommend the at-home try whitening process “Nite White” by Discus Dental. There are also dental office procedures like Zoom, which can make teeth seven to eight shades lighter in just two hours. Consulting a dentist before whitening teeth is recommended.

A cosmetic procedure that is popular in Hollywood and quickly catching on in Fort Worth is porcelain veneers, said Phillips. Porcelain veneers are thin shells that fit over teeth to make a smile straight and gleaming white. They cover brittle or stained teeth, and can provide great support to the original structure of the teeth. Porcelain veneer procedures range in price from $12,000 to $18,000. “It takes a smile from average to awesome in a matter of two visits,” said Phillips.

Another innovative cosmetic process is “teeth-in-an-hour,” which range in price from $10,000 to $50,000. The concept behind teeth-in-an-hour is that implant fixed dentures can be placed in the mouth and ready for lots of smiles in around an hour. According to Phillips, this process is one of the newest procedures that could have the greatest potential impact on patients.

Dental technology has certainly made an impact on new cosmetic procedures and whitening products and can help create a bright smile. “It is important to obtain the finances to get teeth fixed, because poor dental health can cause medical problems, ” said Phillips.

Your teeth should not be neglected, and personal care is an important part of your daily routine. It is crucial to consult with your dentist and to do research before choosing a dental procedure or product.
