MY FRIEND HAS DENTAL IMPLANTS, BUT ARE YOU SURE THEY WILL WORK FOR ME?
First, we have to evaluate the quantity and quality of bone in the implant area. This is the real key to success with any dental implant. However, with today’s highly sophisticated methods of restoring lost bone, patients who once would not have been considered good candidates can have successful implant procedures. In most instances where bone quality or quantity is insufficient, a procedure to add bone or grow new bone must be completed before beginning implant treatment.
Second, you should be in good general health. Smoking or uncontrolled diabetes can have a negative effect the success of dental implants. Your age is not a concern in predicting success. At our office, patients from 40 years old to 83 years old have had successful implant treatment.
I’M ANXIOUS ABOUT THE PROCEDURE. IS IT PAINFUL?
Our patients typically report that they feel no pain during the implant procedure. It’s not uncommon though, to feel a little anxious before your appointment. Dr. Phillips and his staff help patients, even those who are especially anxious, feel at ease. During your treatment, you can relax and listen to your favorite music on headphones. If you’re extremely fearful, you may prefer to have sedation dentistry, which involves taking a specially prescribed oral sedative taken before your appointment that allows you to rest peacefully during the procedure. IV sedation is also available. Typically, patients need only minimal prescription pain medication after an implant procedure, but we’ll call once you are home to make sure that you are as comfortable as possible.
